SECRETS TO SHOPPING SUCCESS: Decision-Making Criteria (5 C's + 5 F's + 5 P's)

5 C's…

COMFORT: Does the item feel good on your body? Does it make you feel over-exposed or does it reveal/expose a body part you’re insecure about? Does it negatively affect your posture? If it’s a top, can you lift your arms easily? If it’s a bottom, can you sit comfortably in it? If it's a shoe, can you walk or stand comfortably in them (possibly for long periods of time if needed)? Will the item cause that area to perspire or trap moisture/heat?
CUT: Does the cut/shape of the item fit YOUR shape and flatter your body?
CAMOUFLAGE: Does the style of the item aid in minimizing body flaws and/or draw the eye away from problem areas?
COLOR: Is the item in a shade that’s among the favorable hues in your seasonal color palette, especially if it’s going to be near your face? Do the colors in the tops and bottoms work together and do you have accessories that will go with them? Are the colors in your outfit monochromatic, complementary or contrasting? Where would you like the color focus to be emphasized?
CARE: How much time, effort, and expense will this item entail to launder/hand wash/iron/dry clean after each time it’s worn?

5 F's…

FIT: Does the item cling to you, pinch/bind, creep up, or bunch up anywhere?
FABRIC/FEEL: How does the fabric feel against your skin? Is it soft or rough, smooth or scratchy, flexible or rigid? Is it cool or warm to the touch? Does the fabric seem to let your skin breathe? Is it a natural fiber? Will it help you stay cool or help you stay warm? Are you allergic to any of the item’s fabric contents or will it irritate sensitive skin (if you’re prone to that)?
FUNCTION: What area(s) of your life will this garment/item serve you in? (Work, leisure, socializing/dating, special occasion, etc.)
FLATTERING: Does the shape/cut/fit/style/color/fabric of this garment flatter your body (accentuating the positive and/or minimizing the negative)?
FASHIONABLE: Does this item look “current” enough? Does it have any tell-tale signs of being an outdated trend (shapes, lengths, colors or fabrics that are pass�)?

5 P's…

PERSONALITY: Does this item reflect your personality in some way or does it suggest a trait that you’d like to project?
PERFORMANCE: How well will this item hold up after many wearings/washings? Is it well-made workmanship and quality materials that will last, or it is a novelty item that you don’t expect to wear very often or you won’t mind if it won’t survive a few washes?
PRICE: Consider the quality for the price point. Good quality items that are great staples are worth paying more for and should be viewed as an investment, especially if they will work with several other pieces in your wardrobe.
PATTERN/PRINT: Is the pattern/print too large or too small or the wrong color/shape to aid in the effect you’re seeking? Keep in mind that vertical patterns are slimming and add height, while horizontal patterns add width and can visually cut you in half. Small patterns can create texture/dimension and large patterns can visually trick the eye to hide bulges but can also expand the surface area sometimes.
PLACE: Where would you be wearing this item? If you don’t know where you might wear it, then you don’t need it. Is it appropriate for the occasion/place that it will be worn?
